Many properties which are not connected to the mains gas supply may have opted to have LPG as an alternative supply of gas.

Just like mains gas appliances, LPG appliances still need to be maintained annually but seem to get overlooked.

One of the most important items that need to be inspected is the LPG hoses.

When your gas supply is from storage bottles, you will have either a, two or four hoses set up.

These connect to the changeover valve, which in turn connects to the gas bottles.

Some of the LPG appliances may also have a hose connection, again, these need to be inspected.

Internal hoses are normally used on boats as well as mobile homes.

LPG regulations state that all LPG hoses have to be replaced every five years.

This is a safety measure as overtime, the hoses will start to deteriorate, they may look fine on the outside, but internally they could be breaking down.

Every LPG hose produced is date stamped, so you know how old the hoses are.

When purchasing new gas hosing, ensure it is manufactured to BS EN ISO 9000. BS3212 or BSEN1763.

It’s not just the hose that needs to be inspected, the gas regulator or changeover valve also needs to be inspected.

This regulator also needs to be replaced every ten years.

It’s surprising how many people do not realise that the hoses and regulator need to be inspected.

All LPG appliances should also have an annual inspection.

This ensures that they are working as they should be, but most importantly, they are safe to use.

Just like mains gas, when employing someone to work on your gas appliances, ensure they are registered with gas safe.

Make sure they are also registered to work on LPG.

Every engineer will carry a gas safe card with them.

On the card will be on details of what appliances they can work on, as well as if they can work on LPG.

Should you use someone who is not registered, you could be liable for a penalty as you are breaking the law.

Always be safe and use a registered engineer for your gas work.
